Carbon Fibre Steering Wheel

A lightweight carbon fibre steering wheel, designed and moulded in our own workshop, shaped around the driver's hands and built to carry the car's controls.

The challenge

The steering wheel is the part of a race car the driver touches most. It has to be light and stiff so every input reaches the front tyres, comfortable to hold through a full race, and laid out so the controls and display are easy to use at speed. It also has to fit our quick release boss perfectly, every time it goes back on.

Requirements

  • Low weight with high stiffness
  • Grips shaped for comfort and control in gloves
  • Openings for the display and controls
  • A mounting pattern that matches the quick release boss
  • A premium finish fitting the look of the car

Our approach

We designed the wheel in CAD around the driver's hands, the controls and the mounting pattern of the electronic quick release boss. It is then moulded in carbon fibre in our own workshop and finished in a satin coat that shows the weave, with the Hyper mark applied to the face.

Making the wheel ourselves means the shape, the fit to the boss and the finish are all controlled under one roof, and new wheels can be produced to the same standard for every car.
