The challenge
The X1 needed a chassis that was light enough to compete, stiff enough to give the suspension a stable platform and strong enough to protect the driver in a crash. It also had to be built consistently, car after car, and be quick to repair and service at the track.
Requirements
- High torsional stiffness at a low weight
- A safety cell built around the driver, including roll and side impact structures
- Mounting points for every system on the car, designed in from the start
- Repeatable fabrication for a production run of race cars
- Easy access for servicing between sessions
Our approach
The chassis was designed in CAD as a complete assembly, with the suspension, drivetrain, bodywork and driver packaged around it. Designing everything together meant every bracket and mount had a home before a single tube was cut.
Each steel frame is fabricated in our own workshop. Composite floor and side panels are also made in house and fitted to the structure, adding protection while keeping weight down.
Results
Season after season of competition keeps proving the design. The same approach of designing the structure and its parts together is what we bring to frames and structures for our clients.
